An evaluation of genre-specific and adaptive filtering approaches to speech enhancement in high-noise environments

Group 05 is developing a wearable headphone prototype and comparing genre-specific finite impulse response filtering, adaptive normalised least mean squares (NLMS) filtering and a conventional speech-band filter for speech enhancement in high-noise music environments.

Investigation question

How do genre-specific finite impulse response filtering, adaptive NLMS filtering and a conventional speech-band filter compare for real-time embedded speech enhancement in music environments where sound pressure levels exceed 100 dB?

Intended outcome

The project aims to produce a dual-microphone embedded prototype and a repeatable comparison of speech quality, intelligibility, word error rate, signal-to-noise ratio improvement and processing latency across the three filtering strategies.

Ryan Jammy

I’m the kind of person who always has a million things going on at once. My schedule is usually packed, but I like it that way—I push myself to do my absolute best and somehow always manage to get everything done. When I’m not tied up with projects, I’m almost always staying active. I love hitting the gym, playing rugby, and pushing my physical limits, which is why I decided to take on and complete a Hyrox. When I’m watching sports instead of playing them, my weekends are all about cheering for Chelsea on the football pitch and backing the Lions in rugby. I’ve also got a massive passion for technology. I love geeking out over new tech trends, figuring out how things work, and keeping up with everything happening in the digital space. As much as I love sports and tech, none of it really matters without the right people around. I’m a big believer in keeping your inner circle tight with family and friends who genuinely have your back and support you no matter what. My Jewish faith and my community are a huge part of that foundation, keeping me grounded through all the chaos. At the end of the day, it's just about balancing a busy life, a bunch of varied interests, and the people who make it all worthwhile.

I originally chose to study engineering to help people, but after four years of undergraduate projects, my passion has pivoted to increasing stakeholder value. My main contribution to our capstone is ensuring the final deliverable doesn’t catch fire, or at least, ensuring the fire is well documented. Following graduation, I look forward to taking this unique blend of pragmatism and corporate synergy into my MSc and then the workforce. When I am not writing my own bio, I enjoy abstract strategy (Go, chess), lowering my embarrassingly high golf score, and playing around with the latest technical developments.
